Welcome to Barack Obama School

Barack Obama School opened in 2010 and was named after the country’s first African-American president.

Following in the steps of former First Lady Michelle Obama, BOS has been recognized for its efforts to promote healthy lifestyles for students and families. For two years, the school has received the America’s Healthiest Schools Bronze Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Students have planted gardens and participated in events like Girls on the Run throughout the year to encourage physical activity and healthy diets.

Located in Pine Lawn, BOS enrolls approximately 430 students has forged strategic community partnerships to benefit students and families. Staff also work to involve parents in the school with events like Donuts with Dads, Black History Month events, and various workshops and sessions.

BOS has also served as the host site for Normandy’s annual Read with Me! community celebration, a free event that promotes literacy.

Students have also reached out to help other communities. In 2016, BOS students collected more than 6,000 bottles of water which were delivered to residents in Flint, Mich., where contaminated tap water has adversely affected thousands of residents there.
